Community Sustainable Farming

Grow it here, share it here

Green Hills is a community farm. Neighbours work the land together, and what grows here feeds the people who live here first, season after season.

What we grow

Staple food for our community, and one crop the world taught us to value.

Bunches of green matooke loaded into a car boot

Matooke

Green cooking bananas, the everyday staple of every table in the community.

Open sacks filled with shelled maize

Maize

Grown, shelled and bagged here, for meals and for market.

Red bananas

Sweet and medicinal for the elders in the community.

Huitlacoche

The maize fungus we nearly threw away. Now it pays the farm's running costs.

Farming that keeps going

Two rules the farm runs on.

Feed people first

The harvest goes to the community before anything else, through weekly community meals.

Waste nothing

Even a crop disease can be a harvest. Huitlacoche taught us to look twice before we throw anything away.

From soil to sack

Breaking the ground by hand, then filling sack after sack of maize at harvest, with banana groves all around.
